If your car is having any difficulty starting up, you’ll want to get it to the shop before it won’t fire up at all and you find yourself stranded. At Chuck’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing issues that cause no-start. Here’s a look at five common reasons that cars won’t start.
Dead or Weak Battery
Among the most common reasons for a car not starting is a dead or weak battery. Batteries can lose charge due to age, leaving lights on, or in extreme weather conditions. If you hear a clicking noise when you turn the key, it's a good sign that the battery is too weak to start the engine. A jump start may temporarily solve the issue, but it’s important to have your battery tested and replaced if necessary.
Faulty Starter Motor
The starter motor is responsible for turning the engine over when you start your car. If the starter motor is faulty, you may hear a grinding noise or nothing at all when you try to start the car. A bad starter will usually need to be replaced, as it won’t reliably engage the engine to start it.
Fuel Delivery Issues
If your car isn’t getting fuel, it won't start. This can happen if the fuel pump is malfunctioning, the fuel filter is clogged, or if you're simply out of gas. Common symptoms of fuel system problems include power loss and decreased gas mileage.
Faulty Spark Plugs
Spark plugs ignite the fuel in the engine's cylinders. If your spark plugs are dirty or worn out, they may not produce the spark needed to start the engine.Regularly replacing spark plugs as part of your vehicle’s maintenance schedule can help prevent this problem.
Bad Alternator
The alternator charges the battery. If it’s faulty, you could find yourself with a dead battery and needing assistance. Signs of a bad alternator include flickering lights and malfunctioning electrical accessories such as the radio and power seats.
