Don’t Ignore these Symptoms of a Coolant Leak

Chuck's Auto Repair • 6 September 2024

Your vehicle's cooling system plays a critical role in maintaining proper engine temperature and preventing overheating. However, a coolant leak can compromise this system, potentially leading to severe engine damage if left untreated. At Chuck’s Auto Repair, we provide expert coolant leak detection and repair in the greater Casper, WY area. Here are four signs of a coolant leak that you should never ignore.

Low Coolant Levels

One of the clearest indications of a coolant leak is consistently low coolant levels. If you find yourself frequently topping off your coolant, it could mean there's a leak in the system. Whether it's a small leak that gradually drains the coolant or a more significant issue, it's important to identify the source as soon as possible. For safety reasons, remember to only check/add coolant after the car has cooled down.

Puddles Under Your Vehicle

If you notice green, orange, or pink (your coolant might be a different color) puddles forming under your vehicle after it’s been parked, this could be coolant leaking from your car. Coolant typically has a sweet smell as well. Puddles are often the result of a leak in a hose, radiator, or water pump and should be addressed quickly to prevent engine overheating.

Overheating Engine

An overheating engine is another major sign of a coolant leak. Coolant is responsible for regulating engine temperature, and when there’s not enough of it, the engine can overheat. If your temperature gauge climbs into the red or you see steam coming from under the hood, pull over safely and allow the engine to cool before checking your coolant levels.

White Exhaust

A sign of an internal coolant leak is that the vehicle is producing a lot of white exhaust smoke. This could indicate a blown head gasket, which is a serious issue that should be brought to the mechanic’s attention ASAP.
