Quick Tips for Improving Fuel-Efficiency

Chuck's Auto Repair • 25 November 2022

With gas prices still soaring, it’s all the more important to prevent fuel from going to waste. By taking some simple fuel-saving measures, you can save more money on your daily commute. You can easily complete some of these measures as you go about your day-to-day driving routine, while others can be quickly conducted at the shop. At Chuck’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics can complete maintenance tasks that will help your vehicle reduce fuel waste and get more miles per gallon.

Simple Ways to Boost MPGs

One simple way to reduce fuel waste is to make sure your tires are correctly inflated. Tire pressure usually needs to be at a point between 30 and 35 psi, though you’ll want to check your pressure specifications and inflate your tires as required. With underinflated tires, your engine has to expend more power to get the soft rubber to roll down the road, which can cause MPGs to dip. It’s also worth noting that incorrectly inflated tires can raise the risk of a blowout occurring. You can also easily prevent fuel waste by making sure that your gas cap is fully secured after each time you fill up your tank. A loose or missing gas cap may allow fuel to evaporate before your engine gets the chance to put it to use. Another easy way to improve fuel-efficiency is to make sure you’re not carrying unnecessary weight in your vehicle. For every 100 pounds removed from your vehicle, gas mileage increases 1 to 2 percent.

At our nearby auto shop, we can conduct maintenance that will help with boosting fuel-economy. Fuel filters should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles so that contaminants aren’t harming gas mileage and engine performance. And you should get a new air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. A fresh air filter will allow the right amount of air to reach the combustion chamber, which will prevent your vehicle from burning additional fuel to compensate for a shortage of air. At our shop, we can also complete other types of basic maintenance that will help your vehicle get better gas mileage, such as full-service oil changes and spark plug replacement.
