Common Symptoms of Engine Trouble

Chuck's Auto Repair • 15 December 2022

It’s always best to take action at the first indication of engine trouble. If you ignore the symptom, then the problem could soon get worse and become more costly to address. At Chuck’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying and repairing engine problems.

The Check Engine Light

If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn’t automatically indicate that your engine is on the verge of total failure. But it’s still smart to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any developing issues can be pinpointed and resolved. Common reasons the check engine light illuminates include problems with O2 sensors, MAF sensors, catalytic converters, spark plugs, and ignition coils.

Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

If you hear any abnormal sounds emerge from your engine, then you should definitely try to figure out what’s causing them. Knocking/tapping noises are of particular concern. These noises could emerge because of issues such as bad rod bearings, insufficient lubrication, and a lean air/fuel mixture. If you hear squealing sounds, then there could be a serpentine belt problem. Grinding noises are symptomatic of issues like a broken power steering pump or water pump.

Another red flag is that your engine has lost a lot of power. It’s not necessarily cause for concern if your old car with high miles has slowly lost a little bit of power. But if your engine suddenly loses a substantial amount of power then you could be dealing with a serious problem, perhaps related to a piston or head gasket.

You’ll also want to get to the shop if you notice discolored or excessive exhaust smoke. Black smoke suggests that too much fuel is being burned. Blue-tinted smoke is a sign of an oil leak. White smoke is symptomatic of an internal coolant leak and could be a sign that you have a blown head gasket.
