A healthy suspension helps to ensure that your vehicle handles smoothly and safely. So as soon as you suspect that suspension trouble is brewing, you’ll want to make it a priority to get to the shop for an inspection. At Chuck’s Auto Repair, our local mechanics provide expertise with suspension repair in the greater Casper, WY area.
Warning Signs of Suspension Failure
Sometimes, symptoms of suspension trouble become apparent during the braking process. With a faulty suspension, your car might feel like it’s lunging forward at a downward angle when the brakes are engaged. And if your suspension is bad, then your car could take longer to reach a complete stop after you’ve started braking.
A familiar sign of a suspension problem is that the vehicle starts bouncing/shaking heavily whenever you hit any little rough patch in the road. And if you hear clunking noises when driving over bumps, then you have evidence of a bad spring. Another indication of a failing spring is that the vehicle is slouching in one corner.
There’s also a quick test you can conduct to get a better idea of whether your suspension is in rough shape. For this test, make sure your car is securely parked on flat ground with the e-brake on. Go to the front end, press down strongly on it, rock it two times, and release. After that, go to the vehicle’s rear and repeat this process. Upon letting go, your vehicle should rock no more than three times on its own. But if it does rock more than this, then a mechanic should take a look at your suspension.
There are a couple of other common symptoms of suspension failure to be mindful of. One is that there is oil leaking out onto your shocks, which likely means that you’re due for replacement. Also, if it feels like your vehicle is swaying or drifting when you go around sharp corners, then you could be dealing with a bad suspension.
